The need for money to accomplish ministry is the way it is. No apologies. This is how God set it up. Very few things happen in the realm of any church (ours included) without the generous financial support of God’s people; you and me. That’s the way it was in the Apostle Paul’s day and that’s the way it works today too. And just as there is nothing wrong with admitting the need for money in our own personal lives, so there is nothing unspiritual about admitting the need for money in ministry. For Paul, this group of Christians at the church in Philippi were amongst his best financial supporters. Their generosity helped propel the spread of Christianity not only to the provinces of the Roman Empire, but also to it’s very heart – the city of Rome itself. Today we’ll study Paul’s words of thanks to these fellow Christians for their faithfulness and discover what it is that the Holy Spirit wants all of us to get when it comes to giving. Honestly, there is perhaps no finer evidence of true godliness than financial generosity to Jesus’ church. When we graciously and liberally release our tithes and offerings to the cause of Christ, it is a sign that we are genuinely growing up and living like our Savior.
